THE DECLINE OF ORTHODOXY? A SEMINAR ON SEXUAL DIVERSITY POLICIES IN ART
EVERYWHERE. SEXUAL DIVERSITY POLICIES IN ART @ the Galician Center for Contemporary Art

Lectures and Panel discussions 18th-20th May, 2009
Wednesday 20 May
17:00 h Lecture by Frank Wagner: Visibility: Between Marginalization and Diversity
19:00 h Panel discussion including Ins A Kromminga, Cabello/Carceller and Del LaGrace Volcano
The artistic production present in most museums and art centres has generally ignored the culture produced by gay, lesbian and transsexual individuals and collectives. Frank Wagner, based on his experience in this field in Germany, will analyse the dialectics between ostracism and visibility of sexual diversity.
The main topic to be addressed at the discussion group is the critique to gender dualism. Can there only be references to men and women? What becomes of intersex people? Ins A Kromminga, Del LaGrace Volcano and Cabello/Carceller, all of whom are artists away from convention, will respond to these.
We are making our way toward the last stretch of the first decade of the 21st century. Not very long ago, for the collective imagination, thinking about this century was synonymous with fantasising about a promising future, full of achievements and progress.

The core of this exhibition rests upon the different representations of sexual diversity as a concept within Art. Through this embracing designation it is possible to witness images mainly on homosexuality, lesbianism and the sexualities and identifications usually gathered in the acronym LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual and queer), it can also be completed with the one regarding intersexual people.
The aim is to delve into the production of ideas regarding this topic, emerging in artistic practices mainly since 1969 and carried up until today.
